chapter 11-20

1、Directions: Read the following article in which five people talk about their ideas of dieting. For questions 1 to 5, match name of each speaker to one of the statements (A to C) given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET. 1、Abbey You can always recognize dieters from the sour expression on their faces. They spend most of their time turning their noses up at food. They are forever consulting calorie charts, gazing at themselves in mirrors, and leaping on to weighing-machines in the bathroom. They spend a lifetime fighting a losing battle against spreading hips, protruding tummies and double chins. What a miserable lot dieters are! 2、Marlin I began making some dietary and lifestyles changes during my second year of college and have been eating this way ever since. I like the way I feel when I don't eat animal foods so much more than the pleasure I used to get from eating them. I have much more energy; I need less sleep; I feel calmer; I can maintain an ideal body weight without worrying about how much I eat, and I can think more clearly. 3、Maggie During my first year of college, I gained forty pounds when I began throwing the javelin. For the next twenty years, I carried all of this extra weight and kidded myself that I was in good shape since that's what I weighed in college. Now that I've lost all that extra weight, I feel great! People say all the time, "Well, how do you live without eating cheese burgers or this or that?" and I say, "You just don't. It's not even an option. It's not that hard once you get on it. " 4、Belinda If you are on a diet, you're always hungry. You can't be hungry and happy at the same time. All the horrible concoctions you eat instead of food leave you permanently dissatisfied. A complete food it may be, but not quite as complete as juicy steak. So at least three times a day you will be exposed to temptation. How miserable to watch others tucking into piles of mouth-watering food while you munch a water biscuit and sip unsweetened lemon juice! And if hunger just proves too much for you, in the end you will lash out and devour five huge guilt-inducing cream cakes at a sitting. Then things will turn out to be even worse. 5、Wood I went on diet when my doctor told me that my blood pressure tended to be high. Only at that time did I realize the danger of being overweight. Since I began making dietary changes in 1982, eating this way has become increasingly accepted. I don't feel I've lost something after dieting. Instead, I've got something valuable. That is good health. Now match each of the persons to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. A、Being on a diet is a torture.  B、I feel better with vegetarian food.  C、I lost weight after dieting.  D、I began dieting for the sake of health.  E、Dieting enables people to enjoy life more.  F、Dieting simply causes endless worries.  G、Dieting does more harm than good to one's health. 简答题 10分

2、填句补文 Ennoble Ourselves by Fulfilling Others’ Dreams As Margie sat in church that morning, she practised in her mind over and over what she would say. (6) The service seemed to drag on and on. Finally, the pastor (牧师) uttered the words Margie had been expecting all the morning, “This is a special time of year when everyone around the world celebrates peace and goodwill toward our fellow men. (7) We cannot fulfill everyone’s wish, but we would like to try and fulfill a few. As I call your name, please come forward and tell us about your Christmas wish.”    (8) Margie was the last and the young to speak. As she looked at the congregation (会众), she spoke confidently, “I would like for my grandma to attend church. She cannot walk, and she and my grandpa have to stay at home. They looked forward to coming so much. So that is what I wish for. And please don’t tell them, for it needs to be a surprise.”    Riding home with her aunts, Margie could tell they were speaking in low tones about her wish. She hoped that they would keep her secret. As the next Sunday came around, Margie was getting ready for church when Grandma asked, “Why are you so nervous You haven’t sat still all morning.”    “(9)”    “Of course it will,” said her grandma with a chuckle. “It’s almost Christmas, you know.” Grandpa was getting on his coat when he happened to look out of the front window. (10) Now at this time of year there wasn’t too much traffic, and it turned out that the congregation arrived with coffee, cookies, cups and gifts. They sang Christmas carols and … A、I just know that something wonderful is going to happen today!  B、This year, here at St. John’s, we want to hear your Christmas wishes.  C、One after another, the church members shared their wishes, large and small.  D、He saw some cars coming down the dirt road.  E、She wasn’t afraid, for she knew what an important wish this was.  F、It is really a sacred deed to chant the Bible piously in church.  G、If something unlucky is going to happen it will happen to me. 简答题 10分

In some countries, too, there is a tax on things sold in the shops. If the most necessary things are taxed, a lot of money is collected but the poor people suffer most. If unnecessary things like jewels and fur coats are taxed, less money is obtained but the tax is fairer, as the rich pay it.
